Every year, lakhs of students appear for the NEET UG exam, and everyone has a common dream: to have a good All-India rank. And it should be this way as there are limited seats in the MBBS colleges, and a good rank is the only way to get admission to your desired MBBS college. Because of this cut-throat competition to get top ranks and more than 2 million aspirants, many aspirants get the same rank. To deal with this same rank issue, the NTA has a tie-breaking rule, which helps the NTA differentiate the rankers according to various criteria. This rule has been the same for the last few years, but NTA has updated the ranking system in NEET 2025 with the new tie-breaking rules in NEET 2025.
Most of the aspirants are unaware of this NEET tiebreaker policy. If you are such an aspirant, this article is for you. It will help in understanding the NEET 2025 tie-breaking rule and how it differs from the old one. Before that, let you know that this was one of the significant changes held in NEET UG 2025, including removing optional questions and extra time.
NEET Tie-Breaking Policy
Being a NEET UG aspirant, you must have thought, what if two or more candidates get the same marks in NEET results? And how does NTA deal with it?
Let me tell you that it happens a lot when many aspirants score the same in NEET. Here, the NEET Tie-breaking policy comes into the game. As the same suggests, this is a set of certain criteria that helps assign different ranks to the NEET aspirants who scored equal marks in the paper.

Tie-Breaking Rule in NEET 2025
Often, the NTA keeps the tie-breaker policy the same, but last year, the NTA faced some drawbacks in the policy. Hence, NTA introduced the updated ranking system in NEET UG 2025 and brought new tie-breaking rules in NEET 2025.
Following are these rules in the NEET 2025 Tie-Breaking policy that will decide the rank order in equal marks students;
- Any candidate who has obtained higher marks or percentile in Biology (Botany & Zoology) in NEET UG, Followed by,
- After this, if any candidate has obtained higher marks or percentile in Chemistry in NEET UG, Followed by,
- If there is a tie here also, then any candidate who has obtained higher marks or percentile in Physics in the test, Followed by,
- Candidate with less proportion of the number of attempted incorrect answers and correct answers in all the subjects in the test.
- Any candidate with less proportion of incorrect and correct answers in Biology (Botany & Zoology).
- After this, the ratio of incorrect and correct answers in Chemistry is checked, and the candidate with less proportion will be given the rank.
- If the proportion of candidates in Biology and Chemistry is the same, then the ratio of incorrect and correct answers in Physics will be checked.
- If there is no tiebreak in all the above criteria (a to g), then the rank is given to a candidate through a random process with the help of an expert committee.
New Tie-Breaking Rules in NEET 2025 With an Example
Suppose three students, Rahul, Ajay and Reena, scored 650 out of 720 marks in NEET UG exam. All three have the same score, so tie-breaking rules will be applied to decide their rank.
Steps of tie-breaking:
1️⃣ Higher marks in Biology:
- Rahul: 340/360
- Ajay: 345/360 ✅ (highest marks)
- Reena: 340/360
Ajay will be ranked higher.
2️⃣ Higher marks in Chemistry (tie between Rahul and Reena):
- Rahul: 160/180
- Reena: 165/180 ✅ (highest marks)
Reena will be ranked higher than Rahul.
3️⃣ . There is no need to look at Physics and the wrong answer as the tie is already resolved.
Final Ranking:
1️⃣ Ajay (Highest Biology Marks)
2️⃣ Reena (Highest Chemistry Marks)
3️⃣ Rahul
If Biology, Chemistry and Physics all had equal marks, then the one with fewer wrong answers would have been given preference.

How is the New Tie Breaking Rule in NEET 2025 Different From the Old One?
NTA has changed the tie-breaking rule in NEET UG 2025. Earlier, if two or more students had the same marks, the ranking was decided based on the higher percentage in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. After this, the ratio of correct and wrong answers in all three subjects was analysed. If there had been a tie between multiple candidates on the same rank, the rank was determined by a computer-based random process without human intervention.
But in NEET UG 2025, NTA has changed this process. Now, the random process will be completed with the help of an expert committee instead of using technology. This change has been made to ensure more transparency and fairness so that the ranking of students is more reliable and equitable.
Impact of New Tie-Breaking Rules in NEET UG 2025
NTA has updated the tie-breaking system of NEET UG 2025 to make the subject grip and consistency of the exam more important. These changes are aimed at ensuring that students have in-depth knowledge of the subjects and are motivated to get better ranks.
Now, if two or more stakeholders have the same marks, then a lottery system will be selected through an expert committee. The purpose of this process is to get the scientists and partners in the exam to decide more equitably.
Conclusion
NEET UG is one of the most competitive exams in India. There can be many candidates securing the same marks. In such a situation, the overall performance of the candidates will be checked in the exam. All the candidates will have to focus more on their accuracy and conceptual understanding skills. Deep knowledge of biology, chemistry, and physics and incorrect and correct answers in the exam will have to be taken care of. NTA has updated the new tie-breaking rules in NEET UG 2205 to increase fairness in the exam, which is a comprehensive approach to assessing candidates.
