The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued a new notice regarding board exams. It has been clearly stated that students will now have to meet certain conditions to appear in the board exams. Actually, for some time now, it has been seen that many students try to adopt shortcuts without studying regularly. Some want to skip classes and sit for the board exams, while some hope to appear for the exam despite low attendance. Furthermore, some schools introduce additional subjects without permission, leaving the internal assessment of students incomplete. CBSE has taken this strict step by introducing new CBSE rules for Board Exams.

The new Board exam rules for 2026, announced by CBSE, were released via a press note on 15th September 2025. By releasing these new rules, CBSE has made clear that students who don’t follow these rules will not be able to appear in the upcoming board exams. If you are a CBSE board student and appearing in the board exam in 20256, you must be aware of these rules. Well, the New CBSE Rules for Board Exam 2026 are as follows;
1. Two Years of Study is Now Mandatory.
CBSE has made it clear that board exams are not just a game of one year of preparation. For the 10th class exam, students must study both 9th and 10th grades, whereas for the 12th class exam, studying 11th and 12th grades is compulsory. That means no student will be able to jump directly from 8th to 10th or from 10th to 12th grade.
2. You can’t appear in the CBSE Board Exam 2026 Without 75% Attendance
Attending class is now more important than ever for students. Meanwhile, there has already been a 75% attendance rule in CBSE. The board has mandated that students must have at least 75% attendance to appear for board exams. This means that if you’re not attending school, your dream of taking the exam may remain unfulfilled.
3. Importance of Internal Assessment and Practicals
Since the new education policy, projects, assignments, tests, and practicals have become an integral part of studies. If a student fails to participate, their assessment will be incomplete. In such a case, they will be considered an “Essential Repeat,” meaning they will have to take the same class again.
4. Two Additional Subjects for 10th And 1 For 12th Class Allowed
Now, 10th class students are allowed to choose a maximum of two additional subjects apart from the five core subjects, while 12th class students will be able to take only one additional subject. But keep in mind that these will also have to be studied for two consecutive years; it will no longer be possible to just enrol and appear in the exam.
5. Tighten Strickness for Schools Too
New CBSE Rules for Board Exam 2026 have also covered the Schools affiliated with CBSE. CBSE has also given strict instructions to schools. If a school starts teaching a subject without permission, then the students will not be allowed to take the exam for that subject. For this, the school will have to prove that it has facilities like teachers and a laboratory for that subject.
6. Changes for Compartment and Repeater Students
Students who are in the compartment or “Essential Repeat” category and have taken additional subjects will now only be allowed to appear as private candidates. This means the path has become a little more difficult for them.

Students will be required to maintain regular attendance, complete every assignment and practical on time, and consider the board exam part of two years of preparation.
