How JEE Advanced is Conducted

Are you a student planning to get into IITs? Then you have probably heard that JEE Advanced is necessary to get into any IIT. But do you know how JEE Advanced is conducted?

For students, knowledge of competitive exams is important so they know what to prepare for. As JEE Advanced is a well-known exam, you might know the basics. But this time, we will be going into the details of how JEE Advanced is conducted and the details JEE Aspirants should know about.

About JEE Advanced

Some of you or your seniors might know that the JEE Advanced was formerly known as IIT-JEE. Why? JEE Advanced is a competitive entrance exam conducted to offer admission into many renowned colleges. The colleges that offer courses through JEE Advanced are IITs, NITs, and the most sought-after centre-funded institutes in India.

For many years, the JEE Advanced exam was the only way to get into IIT. But even with other exams available now, they do not offer many seats in IITs. This makes JEE Advanced the only reliable exam for getting a seat in an IIT.

With JEE Advanced being such an important exam, it makes sense that gaining the ability to take the exam is a big hurdle. To get qualified for the exam, students need to apply for JEE Mains and get a good enough score to put them in the top 2.5 lakh students.

Now you know why JEE Advanced is important to get into colleges like NIT and IIT, let’s have a look at some other details about the exam.

Here is How JEE Advanced is Conducted (Exam Boady, Exam Mode. etc.)

Whether it’s obvious or comes as a surprise, the answer is that different IITs conduct JEE Advanced. All the IITs take responsibility for conducting the exam on a rotating basis.

Take the last few years as an example:

  • IIT Bombay conducted JEE Advanced 2022
  • IIT Guwahati conducted JEE Advanced 2023
  • And JEE Advanced 2023 was conducted by IIT Madras.

For the past few years, 7 IITs have been conducting the exam one by one just like this. So if IITs are conducting the exam, then who sets the papers?

Who Sets the Paper for JEE Advanced?

Again, if you pay attention, you can probably guess this one as well. As different IITs take charge of conducting the exams, those IITs set the paper for JEE Advanced. But which IIT does that?

The IIT organizing/conducting the exam sets the paper. For example, JEE Advanced 2024 was conducted by IIT Madras, meaning that the paper for JEE Advanced 2024 was set by IIT Madras.

That’s easy to understand, right? However, in this system, as different IITs set the papers, some are well known for setting really tough papers, while some are known for setting papers that are more reasonable in their difficulty.

Now that you know who made the paper for JEE Advanced, let’s learn about the mode and exam itself.

JEE Advanced is Conducted in Which Mode?

JEE Advanced is conducted in a computer-based mode, also known as CBT (computer-based test). The exam has two papers, both of which are necessary to take. Each paper takes 3 hours to complete, making the total exam time for JEE Advanced 6 hours.

So what exactly is in the papers? The JEE Advanced papers have questions on physics, chemistry, and maths. Now, you do have to keep in mind that both of the papers for JEE Advanced have all 3 subjects. So it is necessary to study all 3 subjects to get a good overall score in the exam.

Who Can Register for JEE Advanced?

Now let’s come to the last major detail you should know about how JEE Advanced is conducted. The eligibility for the exam.

  • The first requirement to be able to register for JEE Advanced is your performance in JEE Mains. The top 2.5 lakh students who scored well in JEE Mains will have the chance to register for JEE Advanced.
  • The next condition is the number of attempts. Each student only gets 2 attempts for JEE Advanced, so it is important to make the most of your time for preparation.
  • JEE Advanced does have an age limit. The requirement is that the candidates be born on or after October 1st, 1999. SC, ST, and PwD candidates have a 5-year relaxation, meaning that their date of birth should be on or after October 1st, 1994.
  • Another requirement is that the candidates should have passed their class 12th exam or an equivalent for the first time in the current or previous year. For example, someone taking JEE Advanced 2024 should have passed class 12th in 2023 or 2024 for the first time. But just passing is not enough. They must pass with the minimum marks as declared by the organizers.
  • The last requirement is that the student should not have been admitted to an IIT through the JoSAA of the previous year. Whether you dropped out of an IIT or accepted an IIT Seat in the past. Even if your admission to IIT was cancelled, you won’t be allowed to appear for JEE Advanced 2024. However, in this case, the student is also required to fulfil the last four conditions.

Some Tips for JEE Advanced Aspirants

For your school exam and other competitive exams, you might think of just memorizing the questions and answers, but that won’t work here. JEE Advanced is more focused on the student’s knowledge of concepts and applications.

Students should understand what they are studying, not just memorize it. In this case, it is better to know how to solve a question than to memorize the answer to the question.

So, improve your knowledge, understand the concepts of what you are studying, and improve your ability to analyze the questions and apply the proper solution. Knowing what topic a question is based on and how to solve it will naturally lead you to the correct answer.

Conclusion

In short, NITs, IIITs and all IITs need you to appear and score well in JEE Advanced. This is because IITs conduct and set the paper, making it the one and only reliable way to get into the prestigious institute. For students who want to get into an IIT, it is important to know about all the eligibility requirements to make sure you don’t miss out on the exam.

Make sure your JEE Advanced preparations start early and that you are on point for an advantage over your fellow JEE aspirants.
