Will Competition Increase in JEE 2026

The JEE Mains and Advanced exams have been completed, and the JoSAA counselling is currently ongoing. Meanwhile, the JEE 2026 batches in coaching have already started. Students who will appear in the JEE 2026 are worried about the competition. They want to know if competition will increase in the JEE 2026. So, let’s have a dig at it.

We know that lakhs of other students have the same query, as completion will be one of the biggest changes in JEE 2026. They want to know about the increasing competition in JEE. We are here with a detailed guide to address all aspiring JEE candidates.

Nutshells on JEE 2026

As every year, the NTA will conduct the JEE Main in 2026 for admission to NITs and IITs. The exam will be conducted in two sessions: one in January and the second in April. After the April attempt, there will be JEE Advanced, which IIT Roorkee will conduct.

Regarding the exam dates, registration, and syllabus, the NTA is yet to release the official notification. According to the expected dates, the January exam attempt for JEE Main 2026 is scheduled to start in the last week of January 2026, and the April exam attempt is expected to start in the middle of April 2026. Furthermore, the JEE Advanced 2026 exam is expected to be held in mid-May 2026.

Will Competition Increase in JEE 2026?

Yes, the competition is expected to increase in JEE 2026. Specific reasons behind this increase in competition include students’ greater seriousness about the exam, the increasing number of applications, the higher level of the paper, and the nominal increase in available seats. Meanwhile, the Government has announced around 6000 new seats in IITs till 2029

This is not about JEE 2026; competition in JEE increases every year. There was a significantly tougher paper in JEE 2023 than in JEE 2024, and this trend is expected to continue in future years. However, it is debatable how much competition will increase in JEE Mains 2026. So, let’s talk about it.

How Much Competition Will Increase in JEE 2026?

Starting with, the competition is directly proportional to the number of applications, which ultimately determines the final cut-off for both JEE Main and Advanced. Analysing the past year’s application history reveals that the numbers continue to rise.

For instance, JEE Main 2023 records 9.3 lakh applications, which increased to 12.3 lakh in 2024. In 2025, a total of 14 lakh students enrolled for JEE Main. For JEE Main 2026, around 15 lakh candidates are expected to appear in the first attempt, out of which only 2.5 lakh students will be promoted to JEE Advanced 2026 as usual.

With limited selections for the JEE IITs, the NTA is likely to increase the cut-off for the JEE Main. For instance, in 2025, the JEE Main Advanced cut-off was 35.00% (General) on average. This indicates that the 2025 JEE may experience a nearly 40% cut-off. Which means only the best can achieve such high scores.

Reason Why Competition Will Increase in JEE 2026

The primary reason for increased competition in JEE 2026 is limited seat availability. Although the JEE’s credibility is crossing oceans and attracting foreign students, the seat availability at IITs and NITs remains low compared to the total number of applications. As of now, a total of 17,835 IIT seats and 23954 NIT seats are available. Even though the government adds new institutions, these numbers only differ by hundreds, which will never be enough for the growing application count in the future.

Another minor reason behind the increasing competition for JEE is the growing demand for IITs and NITs, even in remote areas of India. Additionally, the evolution of coaching culture in the country is helping many students gain proper practice for the JEE exam. So, all future applicants must acknowledge the fact that the JEE will never be an easy option for engineering, as the competition will become intense year by year.

Will JEE 2025 Be Tough?

Yes, the JEE 2026 is going to be tougher than last year. And it is not just about the increased competition in JEE 2026; it will continue to rise every year, and the JEE will become harder year after year. This is because NTA recommends a fixed number of students, 2,50,000, every year. On the other hand, applications increase every year.

Expected Candidates in JEE Mains 2026?

The number of applicants for the JEE Main exam has increased every year. If we analyse the number of applicants over the past few years, there has been an increase of more than 1 lakh students. However, from 2024 to 2025, the number of applicants increased by 4 lakh students.

However, this number decreased in 2025 compared to the 2024 attempt. In JEE Main 2024, around 14 lakh applicants applied. In contrast, 12.3 lakh students took the JEE Main in 2025.

We can see the decrease in the number, but it is not the trend. On a year-over-year basis, we can’t expect a decrease in JEE Main 2026, as there was a continuous increase in applicants year over year before the last year.

Returning to our question, how many students are expected to appear in JEE Mains 2026? One thing we can clearly say is it will be around 14 lakh in the April attempt, and nearly 13 lakh in the first attempt. The number of students in JEE Mains 2026 is expected to be between 15 lakh and 16 lakh. However, this is our prediction because it is not possible to obtain the exact number, as there is no fixed trend of increasing applicants in JEE Mains every year.

Conclusion

At last, we can say that there will be no decrease in JEE competition in the near future. Speaking of toughness, the NTA must maintain and even increase the complexity of JEE papers to cope with the growing competition. So, don’t waste your precious time in proposing, “Will competition increase in JEE 2026 or not?”, and focus on the innovative learning that helps you tackle any level of complexity in the final exam.
