As you all know, NTA changed the NEET UG exam pattern earlier due to COVID-19, where some optional questions and extra time were allotted to the students to normalise the impact of COVID-19. But now, NTA has received one sudden notice informing that optional questions & extra time have been removed from NEET UG 2025. 

On 25th January 2025, NTA released a press note addressing all NEET UG aspirants. This press note was to inform all the aspirants about the paper pattern change in NEET UG 2025. 

This press note was released on NTA’s official website. Well, if you are a NEET aspirant and are going to appear in NEET UG 2025, you can’t afford to miss it. 

Optional Questions Removed From NEET UG 2025

After COVID-19, when NEET UG resumed, NTA introduced an optional questions format as a gesture to normalise the COVID-19 impact on preparation. After adding the optional questions, there were 200 total questions in the NEET UG exam, from which aspirants had to attend 18 questions. 

But, now, NTA has decided to resume the pre-COVID paper pattern and remove the option 20 questions. After removing the option questions, there will be 180 total questions and all questions have to be attempted in NEET UG 2025. 

Time Reduced in NEET UG 2025

Along with the options questions, NTA allowed 20 minutes extra time to the NEET aspirants, which was 200 total minutes. Now, as NTA is removing the optional questions, NTA is also removing the extra 20 minutes from NEET. 

After reducing extra time in NEET UG 2025, aspirants will have 180 total minutes to attempt 180 questions (45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry, & 90 in Biology). 

Updated Paper Pattern of NEET UG 2025 After Removing Optional Questions & Extra Time

  • The questions paper will consist of 180 questions and all questions will be compulsory. 
  • The total duration of the examination will be 3 Hours (180 Minutes).

What More in the NTA Press Note

Addressing the removal of optional questions and an extra 20 minutes time in NEET UG 2025, NTA said that All NEET UG 2025 aspirants are hereby informed that the question paper pattern and examination duration will revert to the pre-COVID format, where there will not be any section B anymore. Hence, there will be a total of 180 questions, which the candidates will attempt in 180 minutes. 

Further, NTA added that the provision for optional questions, introduced temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, will no longer will be available. 

A Last Few Words

This is the second official notification about NEET UG 2025 from NTA, while the first was to inform you that NEET 2025 will be offline and will be in a single shift. Being a NEET UG 2025 aspirant, this update can make you a little bit worried, but you have to understand that all the changes in NEET UG 2025 are only to make the NEET UG exam transparent so that actual test can be taken and give the seats to deserved candidates.
