CBSE Curriculum Update 2026

The CBSE is getting ready to make big changes to the CBSE curriculum. The newest curriculum for 2026-27 says that students will start learning about artificial intelligence (AI) in Class 9 and that they will have to learn three languages starting in Class 6.

CBSE is also going to make the academic framework stronger so that kids can be ready for competitive exams. Including JEE and NEET starting in ninth grade.

The New Education Policy (NEP 2020) brought about these changes. They want to make education more about ideas, technology, and preparing students for jobs in the future, rather than just reading books. If these reforms are implemented, the way students pursue their education could be very different.

JEE and NEET Preparation to Begin in Schools from Class 9 Onwards—CBSE Curriculum Update 2026 No. 1

The major update to the CBSE curriculum will be the embedding of the JEE-NEET framework in the class 9 syllabus.

Yes, you read it right: CBSE will now mold the syllabus and paper pattern according to the formats of competitive exams like JEE, NEET, CUET, etc.

CBSE is bringing this update to reduce students’ dependence on coaching. Until now, students who wanted to appear in exams like JEE and NEET had to join coaching for preparation, as the exam paper levels are higher than those in the board curriculum. As a result, over the past few years, students have shifted their focus from schools to coaching.

Hence, CBSE proposed a solution to level the curriculum and provide the JEE/NEET-level syllabus in schools.

This change will strengthen the school syllabus and prepare students for competitive exams without the need for extra coaching, simply by doing their board studies.

CBSE to Increase Competency Based Questions in CBSE 2026

From the 2026-27 session, CBSE will add the JEE-NEET-level frameworks to the exams.

AI in CBSE Curriculum From 9th Class: CBSE Curriculum Update 2026 No. 2

The second major update to the CBSE curriculum focuses on AI and computational thinking. The board is all set to integrate these two aspects into the CBSE curriculum from class 9th.

The objective of the CBSE is to enable students to acquire a foundational understanding of technology and the digital world from a young age.

In subjects related to AI, students will be taught the following:

  • How data works
  • How computers solve problems
  • The various fields in which Artificial Intelligence is being utilised
  • The role of AI in everyday life

Through this change in the CBSE curriculum, the board is trying to foster the development of both logical thinking and technical understanding among students.

As of now, the curriculum will be added from the next session. Moreover, AI subject exam will be mandatory from 2029.

Three languages Will Be Compulsory from Class 6: CBSE Curriculum Update 202 No. 3

The three-language formula will also be implemented in the new CBSE curriculum. According to this, students will be required to study three languages starting from Class 6.

Additionally, there is one vertical in this update; two of these three compulsory languages must be Indian languages.

For example, if a student chooses to study English, the remaining two languages could be Hindi, Sanskrit, or any other Indian language.

The objective of this change is to keep students connected with Indian languages and culture.

From the next session, 2026-27, three languages will be mandatory from class 6th.

Two Levels in Maths & Science From Class 9th: CBSE Curriculum Update 2026 No. 4

Another major change for CBSE classes 9 and above will be dual-level instruction in Maths and Science. In the new CBSE curriculum, the board plans to introduce two levels in two subjects: maths and science.

Basic and Advanced levels in Maths and Science in CBSE

As per the new curriculum, students will have the option to take these two-level papers in math and science.

The basic one will be mandatory for everyone, and it is the same as in previous years. It will be an 80-mark section that will be the primary one, and everyone has to take it.

But, a new level, the advanced level, will be there, worth 25 marks. This will be an optional section; students can choose it.

But, there is a catch: marks of the advanced section will not be included in the final score; only the basic section score will be calculated. However, if any student scores above 50% in the advanced section, the score will be listed separately on the marksheet.

This will be implemented from the next session, 2026-27.

CBSE’ New Assessment Pattern: CBSE Curriculum Update 2026 No. 5

The last chance in the new CBSE curriculum is the new assessment pattern. The motto behind this change is to ensure that students focus equally on memorisation and practical learning. Consequently, the examination pattern will be made more competency-based in the near future.

Under the new framework, internal assessment may be broadly categorized into four components:

  • Periodic Tests
  • Multiple Assessments
  • Portfolio Work
  • Subject Enrichment Activities

Moreover, in the board exams, approximately 50% of the questions may be based on case studies, data analysis, and application-oriented scenarios.

The assessment will be rolled out in the upcoming section in full. However, the board will start holding a separate exam of the business subject in the 2027-28 session.

A Last Few Words

By the end of the article, you must have realised that the CBSEis not the same anymore. You will have to change the approach you have been using so far. And not only will your teachers and school have to mould themselves according to the CBSE updated curriculum 2026-27.

As for its impact on you, it is certain to affect students in both negative and positive ways. If you embrace these changes, they will prove beneficial to you; conversely, if you continue to study using the same old methods, you will witness the detrimental consequences in your marks during the next academic session.

Your School’s Role in This is significant.

Your school will be the most important part of the process of getting used to these changes. The new CBSE curriculum will only work if schools give children a place to learn that encourages concept-based learning, technology literacy, and meeting the requirements of competitive exams.

A “Best CBSE School” is one that does more than just teach the syllabus. It also gets pupils ready for future competitive exams and their future jobs.

In this situation, several schools have already moved away from the traditional style of schooling and adopted a “competition schooling model.” For example, Prince Academy has long used a methodology in which students learn at a level of competitive exams in addition to the regular CBSE curriculum. This helps them create a strong base for

CBSE On-Screen Marking Rules 2026

As most students are aware by now, this year’s CBSE 12th class answer copies will be checked digitally on-screen. This has been discussed in coaching centres, schools, and on social media. But we have seen there have been many rumours about the new policy. To burst the rumour cloud and clear students’ confusion, here we are with the CBSE on-screen marking rules 2026.

If you are a student and appearing in the 12th boards 2026, you must know these rules of CBSE on-screen marking 2026. These rules will clear your mind and reduce stress. Meanwhile, these rules include pointers for schools and teachers, so they are also welcome in this article.

Let’s Have a Brief on CBSE on Screen Marking 2026

This year, CBSE has implemented an on-screen marking system, currently only for the 12th-grade board exam. This means your entire answer sheet will be scanned and checked by the teacher on a computer screen. The old practice of holding the answer sheet in hand and flipping through the pages will no longer be in place.

Now, let’s move forward to the rules.

CBSE On-Screen Marking Rules 2026

There are many rules that will be rolled out under this scheme. These rules include a compulsion for schools to participate, priority for students in the optional questions, etc. Well, here are all the rules of CBSE on Screen Marking 2026;

The foremost rule of CBSE on-screen marking is about optional questions. If a question has two options and the student attempts both, the answer with the higher score will be counted. However, it is best to write the answer according to the instructions to avoid unnecessary confusion.

This on-screen marking system is currently only applicable to Class 12. The traditional system will continue for other classes.

Every single page of your copy will be scanned, whether the answer is written on it or not. Even blank pages will be visible in the system. So don’t leave anything out, thinking it might not be visible. Everything will be visible now.

If teachers proceed without checking a page, the system will alert them. The copy will not be submitted until every page has been entered. This virtually eliminates the possibility of complaints about unchecked pages.

All affiliated schools are required to participate in the evaluation process. If a school does not cooperate, its results may be withheld. For example, if a school has 500 students taking the exam, a corresponding number of teachers must participate in the evaluation.

All copies will first be scanned. Copies will be collected at each regional centre, scanned, and then uploaded to a central server. Teachers will then check them on screen.

Admission Queries – 9610892222

Is CBSE On-Screen Marking 2026 Secure?

Yes, the system has been designed with both security and transparency in mind. Teachers can log in only from computers with registered IP addresses on the school premises. Checking copies from home or outside locations will not be permitted. This means access will be controlled, and every login and mark entry will be recorded in the system. This reduces the likelihood of any irregularities.

Furthermore, a trial run of the system has been conducted before the evaluation. The entire process, scanning, uploading, and digital checking, has been tested to minimise technical glitches. While no digital system can be said to be 100% error-free, this time the system will be more monitored and tracked than before. This simply means that students’ copies will now be checked in a more secure, recorded environment.

How many students will appear for the 12th board exams this year?

This year, approximately 1,859,479 students will appear for the exam, taking exams in approximately 120 subjects.

How many copies will be checked in total?

Approximately 1,0044,295 answer sheets will be checked onscreen. This system was deemed necessary to minimise the possibility of human error in such a large number of copies.

What if a teacher skips a page?

If a teacher skips a page without checking it, the system will immediately remind them that they have missed a page. They can’t proceed without completing it.

How many copies will a teacher be assigned at a time?

A teacher will be assigned approximately 20 copies to check at a time. This will ensure an organised and controlled process.

Will foreign teachers also be checking the answer sheets?

Yes. This year, some foreign teachers may also be involved in the evaluation process. This will broaden the scope of evaluation.

Competency Based Questions in CBSE 2026
Competency Based Questions in CBSE 2026

Since the last couple of years, CBSE have been introducing a lot of changes in CBSE board exam patterns, including twice the 10th board exams. But over the past few months, there have been many rumours about the new CBSE exam pattern in 2026, which will ask more competency-based questions in the 2026 10th & 12th board exams.

And this article is all about the new CBSE exam pattern 2026 for class 10th & 12th. If you are going to appear in the CBSE board exams 2026, you can’t afford to miss this article, as it contains the crucial information on the updated exam pattern of CBSE 2026.

Competency-Based Questions in CBSE 2026 10th & 12th Board Exams: New Exam Pattern

The biggest thing emerging about the 2026 board exams is that questions will no longer be based solely on memorised material, as in the past. CBSE is gradually moving toward a system where only those students who study with understanding can apply it to real-life situations, and those who possess a modicum of analytical thinking will excel in the exam.

And CBSE will ensure this by increasing the weightage of competency-based questions in CBSE 2026 10th and 12th classes.

However, it is not officially mentioned in any board circular; however, it is indirectly official, and we can clearly see this shift in the recently released question bank for classes 6th to 10th by CBSE.

These question banks clearly indicate that the paper will increasingly include case studies, logic, data, and real-life examples. These questions can only be answered if the student has a thorough understanding of the subject.

This direction is even clearer for Class 10, as CBSE has already decided that the 10th board exam will now be held twice a year. This change is not just a change to the examination system, but part of an effort to shift the entire evaluation system toward learning and understanding.

Yes, one thing must be clearly understood;

CBSE has not yet issued any official notification regarding changes to the entire exam pattern for 2026.

Therefore, any significant changes to the paper sections, question types, or overall structure cannot be considered “final.”

CBSE 2026 Date Sheet for 10th & 12th Released: Download Here

What do Competency-Based Questions mean in CBSE Class 10th & 12th?

When many students hear “competency-based questions,” they think it might be something new or difficult. But in truth, the meaning is quite simple and understandable; questions that test your understanding, reasoning, and ability to apply knowledge to real-life situations.

Until now, students who memorise things have performed well in most board exams. But competency-based questions in the CBSE 2026 exam will slightly change this system. Here, “how much you understood” is more important than “how much you memorised.”

These questions have some distinctive features:

  • Questions are not drawn directly from a textbook.
  • A short story, case study, or situation may be provided.
  • The student has to think—”If this were to happen in real life, how would I understand it?”
  • These may include data, graphs, comparisons, and cause-and-effect arguments.
  • Answers are based on understanding rather than memorisation.

The best part is that these questions truly differentiate between a “topper” and an “average student”—only those who have studied deeply can solve them easily.

But given the way CBSE is moving forward with its question banks, circulars, and the direction of the NEP, it would not be wrong to say that the nature of questions in 2026 will definitely be different and more competency-based.

The most significant difference in the upcoming board exams will be that the paper will test understanding rather than memorised knowledge.

Will Thre be More Competency Based Questions in CBSE 12th Class 2026 As Well?

As for Class 12, CBSE has not yet released any official information on whether Class 12 questions will be more competency-based in 2026, as in Class 10. Any changes that have emerged so far, such as two board exams or a new question bank, have only been implemented for Class 10.

Neither has a new question bank been released for Class 12, nor is there any indication that the pattern will change. Therefore, it would be inappropriate to claim any significant changes at this time.

Yes, given the vision of NEP 2020, it is certainly expected that competency-based questions will increase in Class 12 in the future. However, as no official footprint exists yet, it would be premature to draw any conclusions.

In short, changes are possible in Class 12, but there is no confirmation at this time.

How Many Competency Based Questions Will be There in CBSE 2026?

CBSE has not yet announced the number of competency-based questions that will appear in the 2026 board exams. However, a recent report in the Economic Times outlines a possible question structure for 2026, which helps to understand CBSE’s new direction.

According to the Economic Times of India report, the 2026 board exam questions may be divided as follows:

  • 50% questions may be competency-based — case studies, source-based questions, data interpretation, situational problems, and MCQs.
  • 20% questions may be select-response, mainly MCQs.
  • 30% questions may be descriptive, including short-answer and long-answer questions.

Although CBSE has not formally confirmed this structure, based on the question banks and CBSE’s academic direction, the proportion of competency-based questions is likely to be much higher than before.

Reasons Why CBSE is Increasing Competency Based Questions in CBSE 2026 Board Exams: Conclusion

The major reason for the changes CBSE is implementing in 2026 is that the government wants students’ preparation within schools to be so strong that they do not have to rely on separate coaching for exams like JEE, NEET, and CUET.

NEP 2020 also advances this idea—learning should not be limited to memorisation, but rather, children should be able to understand, think, analyse, and solve real-life problems.

Competency-based questions are a step in this direction. These questions guide children towards analytical thinking, problem-solving, and application-based understanding, which are also the most commonly asked questions in major entrance exams.

CBSE’s aim is to strengthen India’s schooling system so that children learn the skills needed for competitive exams while still in school—reducing the need for coaching in the long run.

Changes in CBSE Board 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education recently released a set of new regulations for the 2026 session. In this blog, we will uncover all the details about the new changes in the CBSE Board 2026. So, let’s get started!

To start with, the updated CBSE board exam changes for 2026 are pretty interesting and intimidating on many levels. However, the board decided on these changes with a vision to improve the high schoolers’ learning curve. However, these changes are still confusing for students to sink in. Hence, we decided to decode all the changes, their significance, and probable cons all at once in this blog. So, stay tuned till the end!

Here is the comprehensive list of  CBSE board exam changes 2026 that every student must know:

1. Annual Two-time Board Exam for 10th Class

The two-time board exam is one of the most significant changes in the CBSE 2026. The CBSE has decided to conduct the 10th class board exams twice in a single year. Students can appear for the final board exam in either February or May. However, the May exam is completely optional. Students who missed the February exam or would like to improve their scores can take the May exam. After all, the best score will be recorded as the final score in the student’s scorecard.

2. Additional Compartment Exam

This new rule is such a relief to those who failed one or more subjects in the final board exam. A compartment exam refers to a special extra opportunity for both 10th and 12th students to retake failed exams for the very last time. CBSE will be conducting the compartment exam in June 2026. This will help the students who failed one or two subjects not to wait for a whole year to proceed with their future prospects.

3. Mandatory Internal Exams and Lab Sessions

The board has made it clear that all 10th and 12th-grade students must attend internal assessments. The internal assessment part covers labs, projects, and other academic activities in each subject from 9th to 10th grade and from 11th to 12th grade. Besides, attending and passing all the internal assessments is a compulsory requirement from now on in every CBSE school. Even though this rule helps students improve their experimental knowledge, some experts are criticising the availability of lab resources in some CBSE schools, especially in rural India.

4. Covering Two-Year  Subjects

Another interesting rule CBSE passed this year is the two-year coverage of subjects across 9th-10th and 11th-12th as groups. This new rule implies that the students must attend the two-year program in order to be eligible for CBSE board exams. So, skipping or failing in 9th and 11th classes will not let you sit in the final 10th and 12th board exams. Again, all the students must also pass the minimum attendance requirement, which we are going to discuss in the next section.

5. Compulsory Attendance Rule from 2026

The new attendance rule from 2026 will be applied across all CBSE schools. The eligibility for final board exams will depend on the attendance of student. Students must have 75% attendance in both regular classes and internal assessments. Since CBSE grouped 9th and 10th for cumulative subject learning, the students must have 75% attendance in both years in order to be eligible for the final board exam.

6. New Grading System

Introduction of the new grading system is one of the confusing changes in CBSE 2026 so far. The CBSE announced that the new grading system will convert marks into 9-point grades, ranging from A1 as the top grade and E1 as the lowest one. The board claims that this grade system will tackle the stress levels compared to the percentage. However, only about 12,5% of students will get an A1 if they study hard. So, the competition level is almost the same, getting 95+ or getting A1 is almost the same, but students with 90% or above will get A1. So, this might turn the tables for some students, but still, the students must be well prepared to get the top marks, no matter whether it is a grade or a percentage system.

7. Digital Registration and Digi Locker Integration

The board made it compulsory for all the CBSE students to register with the Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) in order to appear for board exams in 2026. This 12-digit identification is like an Aadhar number for each student, which makes all the academic records accessible online forever. Alongside, the students must also have a Digilocker account of their own, where they can store their mark sheets, reports, and other official documents securely.

8. Optional Extra Subject Options Availability

The CBSE also introduced an extra subject option for enthusiastic students to gain more knowledge in their areas of interest, in addition to the regular subjects. However, students must select an extra subject in accordance with the infrastructure and availability of teaching staff at their school. Additionally, students in the 10th class can select up to 2 subjects as electives, while those in the 12th class can choose only one extra subject.

Final Verdict

The main goal of the board, besides these Changes in CBSE Board Exams 2026, is to simplify the board exam process. Besides, the CBSE is also focusing on making question papers more concept-driven to improve problem-solving and critical thinking in students by ditching pure memorisation-based questions. Additionally, the results process is expected to be faster starting in 2026. Students can expect the answer sheet to be available in 10 to 12 days after exams.

From 2026, the CBSE board exams will be held from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Also, students who miss the February exam due to athletic reasons can appear for the May exam without any penalty. So, at the end, the CBSE did make some exceptional changes for the 2026 board exams to balance all the important aspects to support students with a better exam experience. So, now you know all the changes, keep them in mind and continue your board exam preparation as usual to get that perfect grade you want.
