new criteria for JEE Advanced 2026

The official exam date for JEE Advanced 2026 was recently announced, and now IIT Roorkee has released new criteria for JEE Advanced 2026. On 6th December 2025, the official JEE Advanced website received a new update about this criterion. If you are going to appear in JEE 2026, you must go through this article.

The updated eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2026 include factors such as performance in JEE Main, Age limit, number of attempts, appearance in class 12, and prior admission to any IIT. So, let’s get started and address all these JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria points.

New Criteria for JEE Advanced 2026: Age Limit, Number of Attempts, etc.

Students preparing for JEE Advanced 2026 are obliged to follow the criteria below. If anyone is not meeting any of the given criteria, he or she will not be allowed to appear in JEE Advanced 2026.

The first is the age limit: aspiring candidates must have been born on or before 1st October 2001. Make sure this is for the Non-reserve and OBC category. Additionally, a 5-year age relaxation has been granted to SC, ST, and PWD candidates.

The second eligibility criterion for JEE Advanced 2026 is the aspirant’s performance in JEE Main. As always, a total of 2.5 Lakh aspirants will be shortlisted for JEE Advanced 2026. And these 2.5 lakh candidates will be selected based on their performance in JEE Main 2026 across both attempts.

Talking about the category-wise division of these aspirants,  10% students will be from GEN-EWS, 27% from OBC-NCL, 15% from SC, 7.5% from ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Again, bursting all the rumours of three attempts in JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee has said there will be only two attempts.

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026, you must have appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, and your subjects must include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Students who appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

The year your board declares your result is considered your “first attempt”—regardless of whether you actually took the exam or your result was withheld.

If your board declared the Class 12 (2023–24) results on or after June 18, 2024,

Then such students (who appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2024) will also be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026—provided they fulfil all other eligibility criteria.

However, if the board released the results before June 18 and only your result was withheld, you will not be eligible.

The last but not least new criterion for JEE Advanced 2026 is about the earlier admission at IITs. All the clauses regarding this criterion are given below, please have a look.

If a candidate has ever been admitted to any IIT (whether they continued their studies or not), or if their seat was cancelled after joining, they are not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

✔ Preparatory Course (2025): Students who were admitted to the IIT Preparatory Course for the first time in 2025 — are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

✔ These situations after IIT seat allotment (JoSAA 2025): If you were allotted an IIT seat, but:

  • You did not report, or
  • You withdrew your seat, or your seat was cancelled before the final round, then you are eligible.

How to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced
How to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026

Everyone knows how hard it is to crack an exam like JEE Advanced, and then getting AIR 1 seems next to impossible. But wait. Every year, one or sometimes multiple aspirants secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced, which means it is hard but possible. But how? It is the question that JEE Advanced aspirants often ask, and here, we are trying to figure out how to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026.

But wait. Some students are still thinking of starting preparation for JEE. All such students must know about JEE Advanced in detail because it is more than what you think or see. It is one of the toughest entrance exams in India and the world. JEE Advanced is the entry gate for admission to IIT colleges in India.

If you want to be admitted to top IIT colleges, you must crack JEE Advanced. It is the second stage of the JEE exam, which is held after JEE Main. Just for an overview, let you know that around 14 Lakh students appear in JEE Main, and the top 2.5 Lakh of them get shortlisted for JEE Advanced. And then, around 17 to 18 thousand aspirants, according to the available IIT seats, crack JEE Advanced and get admission to IIT colleges. I hope now you have an idea of how hard it is to secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced.

However, as we discussed earlier, you can achieve this dream if you study smart and hard with a proper strategy, mindset, and dedication. Well, if you are a JEE aspirant and dream of cracking JEE Advanced and achieving AIR 1, this blog post will help you with this.

First Step Towards Securing AIR 1 in JEE Advanced: JEE Mains

As you know, to appear in JEE Advanced, you must face the JEE Mains, a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Three is an essential eligibility criterion that requires you to be shortlisted for Advanced in the top 2.5 lakh aspirants in JEE Mains

So, the first step you have to move forward to secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced is to appear in JEE Mains and score well enough to include yourself in the top 2.5 lakh aspirants. Afterwards, your journey to the Advanced starts. Although the syllabus for JEE Main and Advanced is the same, you have to follow a completely different strategy than that for JEE Main.

It doesn’t mean that the preparation for AIR 1 in JEE Advanced only starts after JEE Main; it is just that JEE Main must appear in Advanced. Your preparation for the JEE Advanced begins when you first enrol in the JEE course.

How to Get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026: Ideal Strategy

The first thing you should be aware of is that you will need a different and strategic approach if your dream is to not only crack the JEE Advanced exam but to secure AIR 1.  But how should this different approach or strategy look? What are the things you have to do differently than others? Let’s try to figure out how to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced requires a deep understanding of the three main subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Maths. To secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced, time must be allocated to these subjects based on their difficulty level and your skills. In Physics, if you need to work hard on the Mechanics section, give it extra time, while if you have a strong understanding of Optics, it can be revised in less time. Similarly, give a reasonable amount of time to the Organic and Physical sections of Chemistry, as many complex questions are asked from these in JEE Advanced.

Not allocating proper time to any topic can lead to an incomplete syllabus, creating problems in the exam. That is why I plan for every week and read the issues according to the allotted time. This will make your preparation more robust as per the demands of JEE Advanced, and with time, you will gain a firm grip on each subject.

Setting small, measurable and precise goals for everyday study is essential due to the highe competition level of JEE Advanced. For example, a daily goal could be that you will solve at least ten difficult questions of differential equations in Calculus or understand all the basics of electromagnetism in Physics.

Such goals will not only help in self-analysis but also help you develop a deeper understanding while preparing for the JEE Advanced pattern. Given the level of JEE Advanced, it is essential to maintain depth and consistency in the topics. Hence, reality-based goal-setting will help you stay focused while studying.

To crack and secure AIR-1 in JEE Advanced, it is important to focus on the quality of questions rather than just increasing their number. JEE Advanced questions often demand logical thinking and multi-step solutions. So, choose problems that make you go deeper into analysis.

Solving such questions repeatedly strengthens your problem-solving skills and allows you to look at any question from different perspectives. JEE Advanced questions are varied, so focusing on the quality of questions will play a key role in your preparation.

JEE Advanced paper often contains questions that combine multi-layered concepts. If you have any questions about any topic, try to solve them immediately. In the difficult and multi-layered questions of JEE Advanced, clarity about any concept can make you answer the entire question correctly. For example, in Physics, not having a deep understanding of electromagnetic waves and Maxwell’s equations can cause difficulties in many questions.

Do not hesitate to ask your teachers and mentors questions. Resolving any doubts immediately strengthens your preparation, and you will not have to face any problems during the exam.

The importance of short notes in JEE Advanced preparation is immense. Include in these notes the formulas, theories and facts that are frequently used in the JEE Advanced paper. For example, pay special attention to the Taylor series in Mathematics and work-energy theory in Physics.

These short notes are beneficial for revising the syllabus during the exam’s last days. These brief notes will help you to revise the important points quickly instead of opening the books every time. These notes will be like a guide to study the topics in depth in JEE Advanced.

Accumulating backlogs is a big risk for anyone who has the aim of AIR 1 in JEE Advanced. An incomplete understanding of any topic can make it challenging to solve interconnected questions related to that topic, especially when several topics are combined into one question. For example, there is a deep connection between thermodynamics in physics and thermodynamics in chemistry, and a backlog can lead to a lack of understanding.

Set aside a specific time every week to clear backlogs. Clearing backlogs will keep your preparation stable and confident, which is extremely important in a tough exam like JEE Advanced.

Some topics are considered more critical for JEE Advanced, such as integration in calculus, rotational motion in physics, and chemical bonding in chemistry. It is vital to have a strong grip on these topics as they often form the basis of questions in JEE Advanced.

Along with understanding these topics in depth, understand their relationship. JEE Advanced often asks questions that are made up of two or more topics. A good grip on these high-importance topics will help you solve even the most challenging questions.

JEE Advanced paper often asks questions that conventional methods cannot solve. This requires multi-level thinking and different approaches. For example, if a question cannot be solved using variable separation, try solving it using a graphical approach or logic.

Solving such problems will improve your analytical skills and confidence. Mastering these unusual and challenging problems is essential to succeed in JEE Advanced.

Mock tests are essential to crack an exam like JEE Advanced. It allows you to practice the paper in a time-bound manner. JEE Advanced mock tests help you get a feel for the complexity of the questions and understand your performance.

Analyse each mock test after the test and see what type of questions need improvement in your speed. Time management can be a deciding factor in JEE Advanced, and taking regular mock tests can help you improve your time efficiency.

Solving old JEE Advanced question papers is not only an essential part of exam preparation but also helps you understand the complexity of questions and the exam pattern. With JEE Advanced’s previous papers, you can focus on topics mostly asked about, such as organic reaction mechanisms in chemistry and rotation in physics.

Such practice will help you understand which topics to focus on and what preparation is required for the exam.

A Last Few Words

JEE Advanced 2026 will test students’ deep understanding, analytical ability, and unique perspective. The exam demands solving new and complex problems rather than just repeating the information in the books. To achieve AIR-1 in JEE Advanced 2026 in this increasingly competitive environment, it is essential to prepare with these points in mind.

JEE Advanced Competition 2026

If you’re a student who wants to go to an IIT next year via JEE Advanced 2026, you’re probably already looking into tips and news about JEE Advanced. One more thing you should add to this list is the competition in JEE Advanced 2026.

Why should you look into it? The answer is that knowing the level of competition will help you to prepare and securing AIR in JEE Advanced 2026. Information on the expected number of students in JEE Advanced 2026, the number of seats, and the cutoff, when put together, gives you a rough idea of how well your preparation needs to be. Or, more accurately, how well you would need to prepare to get a seat in your desired college.

Analysis of JEE Advanced Competition

The JEE Advanced competition has always been high. Even if you ask your seniors, they will advise you to spend more time on your preparations, as the competition is tough. This is due to the sheer number of well-prepared students, the cutoff, and the number of seats available.

If you look at data from the past few years, the number of aspirants for JEE Mains is increasing. Why is that important? It’s because a higher number of JEE Mains aspirants will raise the average competition of the exam. This will lead to more students who will prepare harder for the chance to get into an IIT.

To give you an idea of the JEE Advanced 2025 competition, let’s look at some data from 2024 and 2025:

  • The first thing to note is that according to data released by the NTA, approximately 15 lakh candidates appeared for JEE Mains 2025. From JEE Mains, only the top 2.5 lakh candidates can apply for JEE Advanced. However, not all qualified students register and appear for the exam. These 2.5 lakh candidates compete for nearly 17,000 seats in IITs and the remaining 35,000 seats (approx) in other colleges, including IITs, NITs, ISM, IISERs, IISc, etc.
  • In 2024, the number of students who registered vs who appeared vs who qualified is: 186,584: 180,200: 48,248
  • In 2025, the number of students who registered vs who appeared vs who qualified is: 187,223: 180,422: 54,378

It is worth noting that there are around 55,000 seats for JEE Advanced, including IITs, NITs, IITs, and some prestigious colleges. However, students usually aim to get admission into IITs, leading to a high number of students aiming for a seat in IITs. According to the data shown above, approximately 1.9 lakh students have registered for JEE Advanced 2024. This means that only 1 out of 11 students would be able to get a seat in IIT. And others are going to take seats in the remaining colleges.

If we consider data from previous years as well, it becomes clear that the number of registrations in JEE Advanced 2026 will be close to 2 lakh.

Factors Affecting JEE Advanced 2026 Competition

Now that we know about the competition in JEE Advanced, we can talk about the factors affecting the competition. We have listed 4 major reasons for the rise of competition in JEE Advanced 2025:

  1. The first one is obviously the number of aspirants. As the number of registrations for JEE Advanced increases, the competition among the students will increase as well.
  2. Next is seat availability. The JEE Advanced only has a fixed number of seats (50,000, to be exact) available, which different institutes share. As the number of aspirants increases, the competition for these 50,000 seats increases.

As mentioned before, in 2025, 11(approx) students were fighting to qualify for each seat in an IIT. This should give you an idea of the intensity of the competition.

  1. The exam cutoff is also a big factor, as it has been increasing every year. For example, in 2025, the JEE Advanced cutoff for the general category was 35% on average. However, considering the higher number of applicants, the NTA finalised the cutoff to be 35%.

The increase in cutoff means that the minimum marks required to qualify for a seat in IIT have increased. Anyone who scores less than the cutoff will not get a seat in any IIT.

  1. The last major factor to talk about is the exam difficulty. As you probably already know, the JEE Advanced exam papers are made by IIT. To uphold the standard and reputation of the exam, it is safe to assume IIT will keep increasing the difficulty every year, considering the number of aspirants keeps increasing. Moreover, the fixed number of attempts in JEE Advanced is also a reason behind the hardcore competition.
Is 75% Criteria Removed From JEE Advanced 2026

Will JEE Advanced Competition Increase in 2026

Yes, the competition will increase in JEE Advanced 2026. It is going to be one of the major changes in JEE 2026. In the past few years, the number of students who want to get into an IIT has been increasing. With many more students looking at IIT as the only reputable institute for engineering, it has decreased their options.

Not to mention that while the government has been increasing the number of seats through new institutes, it isn’t as quick as needed due to thousands of applicants waiting for the office to open, compared to last year.

For example, in 2025, 400 additional seats were added for JEE Advanced, increasing the number of IIT seats to 18,160. Until official information is out, we cannot say how many seats will increase in 2026. However, for the past few years, the number of seats in IIT has only been growing by a couple hundred each year, and that trend could be followed in 2025 as well.

The limited availability of IIT seats, along with the extreme rise in JEE Mains applications every year, can give a rough estimate of how intense the JEE Advanced competition can be.

Combining the factors and information mentioned above shows a harsh reality: A JEE Advanced aspirant should assume the competition will get tougher with each passing year.

Last Words

The level of JEE Advanced has always been high. If you ask any of your seniors, they will surely tell you about how much time they would dedicate to preparing for it. With competition increasing every year due to increased competitors, low seat availability, and a rise in cutoff are just some of the many factors that could and do exist.

But the most important thing to remember is to be determined with your choice. If you are aiming to enrol in an IIT, then you should be preparing well enough to get a full score. If anyone out there prepares by giving their hundred percent under the guidance of premier JEE coaching, it will be easier to crack the JEE Advanced.

Who Will Conduct JEE Advanced 2026?

JEE aspirants are always curious about which exam will conduct the JEE Advanced exam this year. They think it will help them make their strategy to crack JEE Advanced. However, it’s a debatable thing. Well, keeping it aside, we are here to know who will conduct JEE Advanced 2026.

As we get closer to JEE Advanced 2026, students are becoming increasingly curious about the exam conducting body. So, let’s take a deeper look and find out who will Conduct JEE Advanced in 2026.

Before we Start!

As you all know, the JEE Advanced is a part of the JEE exam, which is responsible for admission to IIT colleges in India. This is the second phase of the exam, where 2.5 lahks among 10 lahks + in JEE Mains participate and fight for the 17 thousand (approx) IIT and NIT seats. However, IIT & NIT seats increase every year.

Regarding JEE Advanced 2026, there are no official updates from NTA or any IIT college. However, we are expecting the official announcement via the NTA exam calendar 2026 in September. Hopefully, we will get the exam dates in the exam calendar. Until then, let’s determine who will conduct JEE Advanced 2026.

Who Will Conduct JEE Advanced 2026?

Everyone knows that JEE Main is conducted by NTA only every year, but it is not the same with JEE Advanced. It is conducted by different IIT colleges every year. However, not all IIT colleges are responsible for conducting JEE Advanced.

Seven IIT Colleges, IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, and IIT Guwahati, are responsible for conducting JEE Advanced. These colleges conduct JEE Advanced on a seven-year rotation. Like last year, IIT Madras conducted the exam; any other IIT will do it this year.

For JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee will be the exam conducting body according to the earlier released schedule. However, the official stamp on the information for this year is pending. However, IIT Roorkee will conduct the JEE Advanced 2026 to the greatest extent.

Does IIT Roorkee Make Hard Paper?

Does IIT Roorkee Make Hard Paper?

As soon as the aspirants found out that IIT Roorkee would conduct this exam, students started asking whether IIT Roorkee makes hard paper for JEE. It is possible that you too might have been a victim of this rumour, but there is nothing like that because there are certain norms for making the paper that every IIT must follow. So, the paper will neither be too tough, nor the exam will be closed easily; the level of the paper will be as it should be.

However, every IIT college has a different nature to make paper, which can lead to a slight change in exam pattern, but it will not affect you negatively at all. So, without thinking about the paper level, focus more on your preparation so that you can ace JEE Advanced 2026 with a better rank even with the higher competition in JEE Advanced 2026.

Will Competition Increase in JEE 2026

The JEE Mains and Advanced exams have been completed, and the JoSAA counselling is currently ongoing. Meanwhile, the JEE 2026 batches in coaching have already started. Students who will appear in the JEE 2026 are worried about the competition. They want to know if competition will increase in the JEE 2026. So, let’s have a dig at it.

We know that lakhs of other students have the same query, as completion will be one of the biggest changes in JEE 2026. They want to know about the increasing competition in JEE. We are here with a detailed guide to address all aspiring JEE candidates.

Nutshells on JEE 2026

As every year, the NTA will conduct the JEE Main in 2026 for admission to NITs and IITs. The exam will be conducted in two sessions: one in January and the second in April. After the April attempt, there will be JEE Advanced, which IIT Roorkee will conduct.

Regarding the exam dates, registration, and syllabus, the NTA is yet to release the official notification. According to the expected dates, the January exam attempt for JEE Main 2026 is scheduled to start in the last week of January 2026, and the April exam attempt is expected to start in the middle of April 2026. Furthermore, the JEE Advanced 2026 exam is expected to be held in mid-May 2026.

Will Competition Increase in JEE 2026?

Yes, the competition is expected to increase in JEE 2026. Specific reasons behind this increase in competition include students’ greater seriousness about the exam, the increasing number of applications, the higher level of the paper, and the nominal increase in available seats. Meanwhile, the Government has announced around 6000 new seats in IITs till 2029

This is not about JEE 2026; competition in JEE increases every year. There was a significantly tougher paper in JEE 2023 than in JEE 2024, and this trend is expected to continue in future years. However, it is debatable how much competition will increase in JEE Mains 2026. So, let’s talk about it.

How Much Competition Will Increase in JEE 2026?

Starting with, the competition is directly proportional to the number of applications, which ultimately determines the final cut-off for both JEE Main and Advanced. Analysing the past year’s application history reveals that the numbers continue to rise.

For instance, JEE Main 2023 records 9.3 lakh applications, which increased to 12.3 lakh in 2024. In 2025, a total of 14 lakh students enrolled for JEE Main. For JEE Main 2026, around 15 lakh candidates are expected to appear in the first attempt, out of which only 2.5 lakh students will be promoted to JEE Advanced 2026 as usual.

With limited selections for the JEE IITs, the NTA is likely to increase the cut-off for the JEE Main. For instance, in 2025, the JEE Main Advanced cut-off was 35.00% (General) on average. This indicates that the 2025 JEE may experience a nearly 40% cut-off. Which means only the best can achieve such high scores.

Reason Why Competition Will Increase in JEE 2026

The primary reason for increased competition in JEE 2026 is limited seat availability. Although the JEE’s credibility is crossing oceans and attracting foreign students, the seat availability at IITs and NITs remains low compared to the total number of applications. As of now, a total of 17,835 IIT seats and 23954 NIT seats are available. Even though the government adds new institutions, these numbers only differ by hundreds, which will never be enough for the growing application count in the future.

Another minor reason behind the increasing competition for JEE is the growing demand for IITs and NITs, even in remote areas of India. Additionally, the evolution of coaching culture in the country is helping many students gain proper practice for the JEE exam. So, all future applicants must acknowledge the fact that the JEE will never be an easy option for engineering, as the competition will become intense year by year.

Will JEE 2025 Be Tough?

Yes, the JEE 2026 is going to be tougher than last year. And it is not just about the increased competition in JEE 2026; it will continue to rise every year, and the JEE will become harder year after year. This is because NTA recommends a fixed number of students, 2,50,000, every year. On the other hand, applications increase every year.

Expected Candidates in JEE Mains 2026?

The number of applicants for the JEE Main exam has increased every year. If we analyse the number of applicants over the past few years, there has been an increase of more than 1 lakh students. However, from 2024 to 2025, the number of applicants increased by 4 lakh students.

However, this number decreased in 2025 compared to the 2024 attempt. In JEE Main 2024, around 14 lakh applicants applied. In contrast, 12.3 lakh students took the JEE Main in 2025.

We can see the decrease in the number, but it is not the trend. On a year-over-year basis, we can’t expect a decrease in JEE Main 2026, as there was a continuous increase in applicants year over year before the last year.

Returning to our question, how many students are expected to appear in JEE Mains 2026? One thing we can clearly say is it will be around 14 lakh in the April attempt, and nearly 13 lakh in the first attempt. The number of students in JEE Mains 2026 is expected to be between 15 lakh and 16 lakh. However, this is our prediction because it is not possible to obtain the exact number, as there is no fixed trend of increasing applicants in JEE Mains every year.

Conclusion

At last, we can say that there will be no decrease in JEE competition in the near future. Speaking of toughness, the NTA must maintain and even increase the complexity of JEE papers to cope with the growing competition. So, don’t waste your precious time in proposing, “Will competition increase in JEE 2026 or not?”, and focus on the innovative learning that helps you tackle any level of complexity in the final exam.
