JEE Advanced 2026 Third Attempt
JEE Advanced 2026 Third Attempt

JEE Advanced is one of India’s most important competitive exams for students. And with a limited number of attempts, competition is intense. Students and those who have already attempted to crack JEE are hoping for the JEE Advanced 2026 third attempt. But, with the increasing competition, is the JEE Advanced 2026 extra attempt possible?

Many have been inquiring about a possible third attempt at JEE Advanced 2026. With a high level of competition in the exam, it’s not hard to see why there are discussions on this topic.

Before we start!

The time we are on this article is just before the JEE Mains 2026, both attempts, and the official announcement has already been made. Students who are appearing this year are likely thinking of taking a third attempt in JEE Advanced.

But, apart from these students, many have already given their second JEE Advanced attempt last year and didn’t crack the exam. All such aspirants are waiting for the third attempt of JEE Advanced in 2026.

Will There Be JEE Advanced Third Attempt 2024?

Based on the available information, JEE Advanced 2026 will not allow a third attempt. Many students and aspirants have been hopeful that JEE Advanced might increase their maximum attempt limit. But with no official information, it does not seem possible for the JEE Advanced 2026 third attempt.

For many years, JEE Advanced has allowed a total of two attempts per candidate. The official statement is that a candidate is allowed a maximum of two attempts for two consecutive years. This allows the candidate a second chance or attempt at JEE Advanced.

However, there have also been many discussions on why the attempt limit will not increase. Here are some points for and against the increase in the attempt limit for JEE Advanced.

As JEE Advanced is one of the most competitive exams in India, many students want JEE Advanced to have a third attempt. This is because:

  • Adding just one more attempt can give students more opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills, which can lead to better exam performance.
  • Adding even just one more attempt can reduce the amount of pressure a student faces by giving extra chances to learn and perform better. With such intense competition in JEE Advanced, a student is going to have a lot of pressure to crack the exam and get a good rank.

These points are being brought up in discussions, but these can be possible reasons why there will be no JEE Advanced 2026 third attempt:

  • Keeping the attempt limit it helps maintain the high standards of JEE Advanced, and the intense competition helps maintain the high standards for universities.
  • Increasing the JEE Advanced attempt limit will lead to the exam becoming unfair to first-time candidates.
  • A low number of attempts drives candidates to prepare their best while developing important skills such as time management and focus. This motivates students to crack JEE Advanced as soon as possible.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that JEE Advanced is one of the most competitive exams in the country. For many years, candidates have been allowed two attempts for the exam. With no official information on JEE Advanced 2024 Third Attempt, it seems the attempt limit will stay the same.

People have been guessing why JEE Advanced does not have a third attempt. However, these discussions also point out reasons why the number of maximum attempts should be increased. There are strong points for both increasing the limit and keeping the same number of attempts for JEE Advanced. Well, if you took this exam with the 12th class, you have one more attempt remaining for JEE Advanced, which you can attempt in JEE 2026.

new criteria for JEE Advanced 2026

The official exam date for JEE Advanced 2026 was recently announced, and now IIT Roorkee has released new criteria for JEE Advanced 2026. On 6th December 2025, the official JEE Advanced website received a new update about this criterion. If you are going to appear in JEE 2026, you must go through this article.

The updated eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2026 include factors such as performance in JEE Main, Age limit, number of attempts, appearance in class 12, and prior admission to any IIT. So, let’s get started and address all these JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria points.

New Criteria for JEE Advanced 2026: Age Limit, Number of Attempts, etc.

Students preparing for JEE Advanced 2026 are obliged to follow the criteria below. If anyone is not meeting any of the given criteria, he or she will not be allowed to appear in JEE Advanced 2026.

The first is the age limit: aspiring candidates must have been born on or before 1st October 2001. Make sure this is for the Non-reserve and OBC category. Additionally, a 5-year age relaxation has been granted to SC, ST, and PWD candidates.

The second eligibility criterion for JEE Advanced 2026 is the aspirant’s performance in JEE Main. As always, a total of 2.5 Lakh aspirants will be shortlisted for JEE Advanced 2026. And these 2.5 lakh candidates will be selected based on their performance in JEE Main 2026 across both attempts.

Talking about the category-wise division of these aspirants,  10% students will be from GEN-EWS, 27% from OBC-NCL, 15% from SC, 7.5% from ST, and the remaining 40.5% is OPEN for all. Within each of these five categories, 5% horizontal reservation is available for PwD candidates.

Again, bursting all the rumours of three attempts in JEE Advanced 2026, IIT Roorkee has said there will be only two attempts.

To be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026, you must have appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2025 or 2026, and your subjects must include Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Students who appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

The year your board declares your result is considered your “first attempt”—regardless of whether you actually took the exam or your result was withheld.

If your board declared the Class 12 (2023–24) results on or after June 18, 2024,

Then such students (who appeared for Class 12 for the first time in 2024) will also be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026—provided they fulfil all other eligibility criteria.

However, if the board released the results before June 18 and only your result was withheld, you will not be eligible.

The last but not least new criterion for JEE Advanced 2026 is about the earlier admission at IITs. All the clauses regarding this criterion are given below, please have a look.

If a candidate has ever been admitted to any IIT (whether they continued their studies or not), or if their seat was cancelled after joining, they are not eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

✔ Preparatory Course (2025): Students who were admitted to the IIT Preparatory Course for the first time in 2025 — are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

How to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced
How to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026

Everyone knows how hard it is to crack an exam like JEE Advanced, and then getting AIR 1 seems next to impossible. But wait. Every year, one or sometimes multiple aspirants secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced, which means it is hard but possible. But how? It is the question that JEE Advanced aspirants often ask, and here, we are trying to figure out how to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026.

But wait. Some students are still thinking of starting preparation for JEE. All such students must know about JEE Advanced in detail because it is more than what you think or see. It is one of the toughest entrance exams in India and the world. JEE Advanced is the entry gate for admission to IIT colleges in India.

If you want to be admitted to top IIT colleges, you must crack JEE Advanced. It is the second stage of the JEE exam, which is held after JEE Main. Just for an overview, let you know that around 14 Lakh students appear in JEE Main, and the top 2.5 Lakh of them get shortlisted for JEE Advanced. And then, around 17 to 18 thousand aspirants, according to the available IIT seats, crack JEE Advanced and get admission to IIT colleges. I hope now you have an idea of how hard it is to secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced.

However, as we discussed earlier, you can achieve this dream if you study smart and hard with a proper strategy, mindset, and dedication. Well, if you are a JEE aspirant and dream of cracking JEE Advanced and achieving AIR 1, this blog post will help you with this.

First Step Towards Securing AIR 1 in JEE Advanced: JEE Mains

As you know, to appear in JEE Advanced, you must face the JEE Mains, a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. Three is an essential eligibility criterion that requires you to be shortlisted for Advanced in the top 2.5 lakh aspirants in JEE Mains

So, the first step you have to move forward to secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced is to appear in JEE Mains and score well enough to include yourself in the top 2.5 lakh aspirants. Afterwards, your journey to the Advanced starts. Although the syllabus for JEE Main and Advanced is the same, you have to follow a completely different strategy than that for JEE Main.

It doesn’t mean that the preparation for AIR 1 in JEE Advanced only starts after JEE Main; it is just that JEE Main must appear in Advanced. Your preparation for the JEE Advanced begins when you first enrol in the JEE course.

How to Get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced 2026: Ideal Strategy

The first thing you should be aware of is that you will need a different and strategic approach if your dream is to not only crack the JEE Advanced exam but to secure AIR 1.  But how should this different approach or strategy look? What are the things you have to do differently than others? Let’s try to figure out how to get AIR 1 in JEE Advanced.

JEE Advanced requires a deep understanding of the three main subjects – Physics, Chemistry and Maths. To secure AIR 1 in JEE Advanced, time must be allocated to these subjects based on their difficulty level and your skills. In Physics, if you need to work hard on the Mechanics section, give it extra time, while if you have a strong understanding of Optics, it can be revised in less time. Similarly, give a reasonable amount of time to the Organic and Physical sections of Chemistry, as many complex questions are asked from these in JEE Advanced.

Not allocating proper time to any topic can lead to an incomplete syllabus, creating problems in the exam. That is why I plan for every week and read the issues according to the allotted time. This will make your preparation more robust as per the demands of JEE Advanced, and with time, you will gain a firm grip on each subject.

Setting small, measurable and precise goals for everyday study is essential due to the highe competition level of JEE Advanced. For example, a daily goal could be that you will solve at least ten difficult questions of differential equations in Calculus or understand all the basics of electromagnetism in Physics.

Such goals will not only help in self-analysis but also help you develop a deeper understanding while preparing for the JEE Advanced pattern. Given the level of JEE Advanced, it is essential to maintain depth and consistency in the topics. Hence, reality-based goal-setting will help you stay focused while studying.

To crack and secure AIR-1 in JEE Advanced, it is important to focus on the quality of questions rather than just increasing their number. JEE Advanced questions often demand logical thinking and multi-step solutions. So, choose problems that make you go deeper into analysis.

Solving such questions repeatedly strengthens your problem-solving skills and allows you to look at any question from different perspectives. JEE Advanced questions are varied, so focusing on the quality of questions will play a key role in your preparation.

JEE Advanced paper often contains questions that combine multi-layered concepts. If you have any questions about any topic, try to solve them immediately. In the difficult and multi-layered questions of JEE Advanced, clarity about any concept can make you answer the entire question correctly. For example, in Physics, not having a deep understanding of electromagnetic waves and Maxwell’s equations can cause difficulties in many questions.

Do not hesitate to ask your teachers and mentors questions. Resolving any doubts immediately strengthens your preparation, and you will not have to face any problems during the exam.

The importance of short notes in JEE Advanced preparation is immense. Include in these notes the formulas, theories and facts that are frequently used in the JEE Advanced paper. For example, pay special attention to the Taylor series in Mathematics and work-energy theory in Physics.

These short notes are beneficial for revising the syllabus during the exam’s last days. These brief notes will help you to revise the important points quickly instead of opening the books every time. These notes will be like a guide to study the topics in depth in JEE Advanced.

Accumulating backlogs is a big risk for anyone who has the aim of AIR 1 in JEE Advanced. An incomplete understanding of any topic can make it challenging to solve interconnected questions related to that topic, especially when several topics are combined into one question. For example, there is a deep connection between thermodynamics in physics and thermodynamics in chemistry, and a backlog can lead to a lack of understanding.

Set aside a specific time every week to clear backlogs. Clearing backlogs will keep your preparation stable and confident, which is extremely important in a tough exam like JEE Advanced.

Some topics are considered more critical for JEE Advanced, such as integration in calculus, rotational motion in physics, and chemical bonding in chemistry. It is vital to have a strong grip on these topics as they often form the basis of questions in JEE Advanced.

Along with understanding these topics in depth, understand their relationship. JEE Advanced often asks questions that are made up of two or more topics. A good grip on these high-importance topics will help you solve even the most challenging questions.

JEE Advanced paper often asks questions that conventional methods cannot solve. This requires multi-level thinking and different approaches. For example, if a question cannot be solved using variable separation, try solving it using a graphical approach or logic.

Solving such problems will improve your analytical skills and confidence. Mastering these unusual and challenging problems is essential to succeed in JEE Advanced.

Mock tests are essential to crack an exam like JEE Advanced. It allows you to practice the paper in a time-bound manner. JEE Advanced mock tests help you get a feel for the complexity of the questions and understand your performance.

Analyse each mock test after the test and see what type of questions need improvement in your speed. Time management can be a deciding factor in JEE Advanced, and taking regular mock tests can help you improve your time efficiency.

Solving old JEE Advanced question papers is not only an essential part of exam preparation but also helps you understand the complexity of questions and the exam pattern. With JEE Advanced’s previous papers, you can focus on topics mostly asked about, such as organic reaction mechanisms in chemistry and rotation in physics.

Such practice will help you understand which topics to focus on and what preparation is required for the exam.

A Last Few Words

JEE Advanced 2026 will test students’ deep understanding, analytical ability, and unique perspective. The exam demands solving new and complex problems rather than just repeating the information in the books. To achieve AIR-1 in JEE Advanced 2026 in this increasingly competitive environment, it is essential to prepare with these points in mind.

Three Attempts in JEE Advanced 2026
Three Attempts in JEE Advanced

Changes in the JEE regulations have become frequent yet unexpected since the pandemic. Over the years, the NTA and IITs have announced several changes in both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. One of such major headliners was “Three Attempts for JEE Advanced 2025,” which NTA announced officially last year. However, they haven’t announced anything regarding the continuity of this rule. So, what about next year? Will JEE Advanced 2026 Have Three Attempts as well? To find out, we need to investigate this topic thoroughly. So, let’s get into it!

The three attempts rule is one of the unexpected announcements that NTA has ever put out. JEE Advanced was always a 2-time in a lifetime opportunity untill 2025. However, there are many reasons backing the decision back then. Since we will not receive any official info about JEE 2026 until November 2024, let’s decode whether JEE Advanced 2026 will have three attempts or not here in this blog. So, let’s get started!

Why did NTA introduce the Third Attempt for JEE Advanced?

To start with, the JEE Advanced exam, which is well-known for its exclusivity and difficulty, has never had 3 attempts before. 2025 JEE Advanced was the very first season when the IIT Kanpur, JAB (Joint Admission Board of India), and NTA (National Testing Agency) collectively decided to announce the third attempt rule. The major reason behind this rule was the massive demand for a third attempt from students. Here are a few of them:

  1. JEE Mains has 6 attempts: We all know, the students can appear for JEE Mains twice a year and three times in a row. So, conducting JEE Advanced three times will balance both NIT and IIT gateways to students for a total of three years as an option to get into their dream college.
  2. Pandemic: Well, the pandemic has long gone, but the COVID-19 season surely disrupted some students from the 2021-2023 academic year. For those students who dropped out and rejoined class 12 in 2024, the three-attempt rule was a gift. Well, to be fair, not many students from the 2023 or earlier batches don’t get any benefit from this rule.

Implications of the Third Attempt Rule

Like everything about JEE, the three attempt rule comes with a few implications. For instance, not many students have benefited from this rule when it was introduced for the 2025 JEE Advanced, as most of the COVID batch students are already not eligible for a third attempt. These are the students who actually needed that extra chance, with all the disturbance the pandemic created. The third attempt also indirectly encouraged B.Tech students to drop out of existing courses to check their luck once again. This tightens the competition even more for the limited seats IIT offers. This concern created quite a stir online about the fairness, especially for the first-time attendees.

Who Will Be Eligible If JEE Advanced 2026 Has Three Attempts?

For a minute, let’s assume that the JAB will continue to allow the three-attempt rule for JEE Advanced 2026 as well. Here is the list of students who will be eligible and who are not:

  • Students who appear for Class 12th in 2026, 2025, and 2024 (based on the results date from respective boards) will be eligible only if they are in the top 2.5 lakh pass out of JEE Main. Students who passed out in 2023 or before will not be eligible.
  • Students who were born on or after October 1, 2001 (General) and October 1, 1996 (ST/SC/PWD) will be eligible.
  • Students who have never joined any IIT will be eligible.

Third Attempt for JEE Advanced 2026: Is It Necessary?

Well, the answer is subjective. However, the JEE Advanced only allows the top 2.5 lakh of JEE Main passouts. If the JAB allows the three attempt rule in the future, including JEE Advanced, it will worsen the level of competition in JEE Advanced and Mails as well. The current batch has to face competition in JEE Mains and advanced with the previous batch, which might even include drop-out B.Tech students. This will also pressurise the NTA and IITs to create the toughest papers in order to keep up with the competition. So, in conclusion, there is no silver lining for students or IITs to keep the third attempt rule alive, as not many students benefit from it.

Is 75% Criteria Removed From JEE Advanced 2026

Conclusion: Will JEE Advanced 2026 Have Three Attempts

The final answer to the question “Will JEE Advanced 2026 Have Three Attempts?” is NO for now. It seems that the JAB is going to discontinue the tradition of allowing a third attempt for JEE Advanced in the future, including JEE Advanced 2026. However, we all know the final plug is in the hands of JAB and NTA. Besides, we still have time until November 2025, when we actually get official info about the JEE Advanced 2026. Maybe tables might turn by then, but our sincere suggestion to the 2026 JEE aspirants is to get prepared for the 2-time-only JEE Advanced choice. So, try to give your best in the very first attempt, focusing on the preparation, and enter your dream college in 2026 itself.
